African Science Academy

March 2017 - Visiting the African Science Academy - seeing and learning how excellent educational charity work is being delivered in Ghana.

Why visit The African Science Academy (ASA)?

The ASA has been set up by its founder, Tom Ilube who I met in January 2017. I had heard about the great work Tom has been doing in the education sector in Africa and wanted to learn from him. By sheer coincidence, Tom’s first Academy (ASA) has also been set up in Ghana – the country of focus for the CamBotsio Foundation.

The ASA is a new, girls-only Advanced Level school for maths and science. Opened in August 2016 on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana, ASA is a “sixth-form” college leading to globally respected Cambridge International A Levels.

It was therefore a huge privilege to be invited to the school in March 2017, where I had a great time learning about the Academy’s work. I found both the staff and students equally inspiring! Hearing such bright, young women talk about their passion for science and their career aspirations was amazing. All that and they still find time to do all the things teenagers love to do - follow music, fashion, sport, etc. With the huge opportunities the ASA is providing them, there’s no doubt they’ll all go very far –– Truly wonderful!!
