Education in Ghana

Despite the progress Ghana has made as a developing nation in the 61 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule, a UN study in 2014 revealed that although 90% of Ghanaian children start primary school, by the time they reach secondary age, less than 50% actually have an opportunity to go onto gain a secondary school education. Poverty tends to be the determining factor that denies children the financial means to attend school.

With the introduction of the free secondary high school (SHS) programme started in September 2017, the current government has committed to provide free secondary in the country’s top schools. We know that despite all of these good efforts, education still doesn’t always reach the kids who need it most.

Education is the key route out of poverty. According to the UN, every extra year of schooling increases a person’s earnings by up to 10% and by helping to address the educational access deficiency, the charity seeks to help children improve their life chances.
